Hi all,

I birded Worcester County on Saturday and Sunday and had some nice
surprises. I started at dawn at Truitts Landing (full list below), stopping
along the entrance to enjoy the vocal CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOWS. There was already
quite an assemblage of waders as I arrived at the south impoundment with
more birds streaming in, at one point an impressive group had gathered on
the near shore until they noticed me and flew to the far shore again. Some
highlights were the building numbers of shorebirds including a large group
of SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERs and 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERs. The standouts of the
larger waders were the WHITE-FACED IBIS (first summer) and WHITE IBIS
(juvenile) that Matt Hafner posted about on Saturday (thanks Matt!). I ran
into Karen and Bill Harris, Danny Poet, Janet Shields, and Jeff Shenot here
too. After Truitts, I headed to North Vaughn and immediately heard a
DICKCISSEL singing upon stepping out of the car, the bird was quickly
located among the sunflower crop here. I continued picking my way to
Georges Island before joining up with Jim Stasz, Mike Ostrowski and Rob
Ostrowski in the afternoon. A seawatch from Assateague for the last hour
and a half of daylight produced a few WILSON'S STORM PETRELS flying up and
down the shore and a GREAT SHEARWATER that unfortunately stayed out of sight
in the wave troughs most of the time. Sunday was quite good as well, Jim
Stasz, Rob and Mike Ostrowski, Mike Walsh and I birded Truitt's and North
Vaughn locating most of the birds from Saturday. While at Vaughn, Jim, Mike
W and I watched as the WHITE-FACED IBIS dropped in with a flock of GLOSSY
IBISES, we were able to study the bird close up for a few minutes before a
BALD EAGLE flushed the group.
