Hi everyone,

Today I was out on Poplar Island with the crew. We were finishing up our tern productivity counts, and, although there were a lot of failed Common & Least nests (predation or abandonment [washed out]), there has been a lot of re-nesting, especially with the Common Terns. The Snowy Egrets did well this year and we recorded our first nesting and successfully fledged Glossy Ibis! We saw Black-crowned Night-Heron as well, but, just an adult, so, no confirmed nesting. The Ospreys are doing fine too!

Some of the "winter birds" we've been seeing, were still around... namely, 1 female Surf Scoter, 1 adult male Black Scoter, and the Bonaparte's Gull was still there too.

We ran into Jan Reese today as he was doing his survey. I had a few minutes to scan the flats on the north end of cell #2, and, the shorebirds are really starting to come in. Last week there were very few, (maybe 200?), but, I'd estimate about 1,500 shorebirds now. I'll let Jan provide all the species and numbers, but, there were a nice number of Western and Stilt Sandpipers today, along with Least Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitchers.
