Hello, everyone!

We are only six weeks away from our 18th hawk watch season. We had a
terrific season last year, tallying 3708 birds, about a 40% increase over
2009. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see 4,000 birds this year?

As before, we'll kick off the season with a bird walk to Turkey Point, and
we'll conclude over Thanksgiving weekend. The walk in is full of migrants
during September and loaded with winter visitors by mid-October; however,
those who need to drive in will be able to do so (I'll make sure the park
staff knows we'll need them to open the gate for us). Highlights include the
third week of September, prime time for Broad-winged Hawks; October, when we
begin to see Red-Shouldered Hawks in good numbers and at low altitudes; and
November, when cold fronts bring Golden Eagles.

We ask that you observe from 8 or 9 a.m. until noon or 1 p.m., but if you
can bring lunch and stay longer, that would of course be fantastic. If you
are new to hawk watching, you are welcome to join us any time to see what we
do. A very helpful resource is Jerry Ligouri's book, Hawks from Every Angle,
which has lots of color and black-and-white photos of hawks coming and
going, with tips on telling them apart.

If you can help out, whether for one day in the season or weekly, please let
me know.

Thanks so much!

Pat
