This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, August 16, at 7:30 AM.

Birds of interest include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, WHITE IBIS, MISSISSIPPI
KITE, shorebirds, BONAPARTE'S GULL, terns, and PURPLE MARTIN.

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continues at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD
with a sighting on Aug 11.

WHITE IBIS has appeared in many areas. Among the sightings were 4 immature
birds at Lilypons, Frederick Co, MD on Aug 11 and at least 23 immature birds
in Swan Cove, Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on Aug 12.

A juvenile and an adult MISSISSIPPI KITE were seen near the corner of Orange
Hunt Lane and Red Fox Dr, Fairfax Co, VA on Aug 13.

Shorebird migration continues in full force. As many as 5 UPLAND SANDPIPERS
were found on Aug 10, 13, and 14 at the corner of Oland Rd and Rt 85 in
Frederick Co, MD. Two UPLAND SANDPIPERS were in a field near the
intersection of Mill Lane and Rt 213 in Cecil Co, MD on Aug 15. A HUDSONIAN
GODWIT was on Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on Aug 12.
Another HUDSONIAN GODWIT was in Raymond Pool, Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE
on Aug 11 and two MARBLED GODWITS were also there. The mitigation area at
Cox Creek, also known as Swan Creek, in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD had an
adult BAIRD'S SANDPIPER on Aug 10 and 11.
This area is open only Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM and
birders must sign in at the office.

A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was found near Bombay Hook NWR on Rt 9 just north
of Leipsic, Kent Co, DE on Aug 11. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen at the
Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD on Aug 12.
Another RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was in a flooded field on the south end of
Damsontown Rd, Queen Annes Co, MD on Aug 14.

A juvenile BONAPARTE'S GULL was at Violettes Lock, C&O Canal, Montgomery Co,
MD on Aug 11. Two SANDWICH TERNS were found near the tour boat launch in
Point Lookout SP, St Marys Co, MD on Aug 14. Two COMMON TERNS were seen
upstream of Riley's Lock, C&O Canal on Aug 13 and a BLACK TERN was spotted
at Violettes Lock on Aug 14.

The PURPLE MARTIN roost at the Farmer's Market at 17th and Main Sts in
Richmond, VA grew through the week with perhaps 28,000 Martins there on Aug
13-and about two hundred birders.

A trickle of migrating warbler reports indicates that the autumn songbird
flight is beginning with much more to come.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports before midnight Monday, identify
the county as well as state, and include your name and a Tuesday morning
contact, either e-mail or phone.

Thank you for calling, and GOOD BIRDING.
