Hi --
To add to Bob's post about Nighthawks, during the 1980s Maryland
Breeding Bird Altlas project, I found breeding Nighthawks in a couple of
my blocks including some breeding on the roof of Wheaton Plaza! You
could go there in the summer in the evening and hear them calling.
I doubt if any breed in this area (Wheaton/Silver Spring) now although
there are plenty of flat, graveled roofs. There appears to have been, in
the
last decade or two, a reduction in the number of night-flying insects -- we
get very few moths at our lights now, for example -- although I am not sure
if this has been quantified. Just an observation --
