A mystery to me at first, this ruffled bird on the sand bar at 4:30 pm EDT just north of Bethany Beach looked at first like a diminutive royal tern with a black bill. The bird proved patient, however, or perhaps just exhausted, and let me edge close enough to get a clear naked-eye view of the buff bill tip.
