Jane Kostenko and I were hoping to cash in on the shorebird bonanza of Charles County, and elsewhere in MD, in southern Calvert County. We drove down Turner Road and Soller's Wharf Road and there was basically no shorebird habitat. The corn and soy beans were still unharvested leaving no open ground for any shorebird except perhaps Killdeer which we also didn't see.

Turner Road had tons of European Starlings and Eastern Bluebirds gorging on a grasshopper spectacle. They were covering the road maybe because it was finally warm with the sun coming out for the first time in days? Or perhaps this is the beginning of the swarm of locusts that will follow the earthquake, hurricane and flooding?

Anyway, long story short, if you're looking for shorebirds in Calvert, don't bother with Turner Road and Soller's Wharf Road.
