Must be a coastal plain thing, but fall Nighthawks by the bay are seem harder to come by, though I did see two at Jug Bay the other night.

At Greenbury Point, I did some dusk parking lot birding with the kids. We had about 8-10 Eastern Kingbirds hawking insects from the treetops near the West Road, and double that number of Laughing Gulls doing the same (hawking insects), at a higher altitude.

As I was leaving, I heard a chip note from the weedy area at the base of the pine grove across from the main parking lot. The chip had a MOWA quality about it. With the car parked and windows down, I chipped for s but, and then whistled my little screech owlimpression. And while that chipper didn't reveal itself, a Redstart flew in and a second later, something deep in the forest trilled a whistle back to me.

Good Birding,
