On Wednesday morning, Sept. 14th, clear skies and a light SW wind resulted in a rather slow flight with only four species of migrating hawks seen. By afternoon some clouds began to appear but migrants remained sparse. Thanks to our observers for scanning through the heat and humidity!!
One thing we've noticed so far is the large number of dragonflies migrating through Cromwell Valley this year. For the last 5 days every time we scan the sky for raptors our binocular view reveals groups of dragonflies. This is in every direction, across the whole sky, both low and very high, beginning mid-morning and lasting until late afternoon. We can only imagine how many have come through-tens of thousands at least.
The weather looks very promising for a good flight of Broad-wings over the next few days once the predicted cold front pushes by. Cooler temperatures and winds out of the NE should create ideal conditions, especially if the sky is a nice mix of sun and clouds. The watch-site will have observers from morning until mid to late afternoon over the next week or so in hopes of catching the often spectacular flights of the BWs. "Keep looking up, and they will come...." good advice from Elliot K!!!!
