Cromwell Valley Park HawkWatch - Thursday 9/15/ and Friday 9/16 2011

Thursday's flight was rather sparse under mostly cloudy skies. We began at 9:00 AM and light rain shut us down by about 2:00 PM. Five observers were on hand.

Broadwings - 14

Sharpies - 9

Osprey - 5

Am Kestrel - 2

B. Eagle 2

Friday morning was full of promise. A cold front out of the NW had pushed through, dropping temperatures and bringing light NE winds and a nice mix of clouds. We were not disappointed. Sharpies began moving at around 9:30 AM, while only a handful of Broadwings were seen until 2:00 PM when larger groups began to appear. Over 300 BWs were seen late in the day, losing altitude and descending across the valley, searching for roosting sites. Hopefully this may give us a bit of a lift-off of BWs on Saturday morning. Watch-sites all along the east coast north of us reported large flights. Visit hawkcount.org for details.

9/16 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM - Andy Smith, Joe Stag, Sue Ricciardi and John Hoffman were our observers - 6 visitors

Broadwings - 803

Sharpies - 46

Coopers - 1 ( several local Coops have been very active all week, possibly resulting in an undercount of migrants)

Osprey - 3

B. Eagle - 1

Am. Kestrel - 10

Merlin - 1 ( our first this season?)

N. Harrier - 5

Un.Id. Raptor - 5

note: In the Owings Mills area of Baltimore County I saw a stream of approximately 340 BWs at 3:02 PM, and several other groups ranging from 12 to 70 BWs. Mark Scarff counted just under 700 BWs in Manchester, Harford County.
