Just as we began our walk (Chesapeake Audubon hike, 14 participants), someone saw a Yellow-Billed Cuckoo by the parking lot, and I thought that was a good omen for a good day. But the first half of the walk turned out to be dead, silence of the tombs--except for a couple of yellowthroats, two pileateds, and a drama btw a blue jay and a sharpy--bj chasing sharpy, then vice versa.

But then we ran into an extended wave of birds, and suddenly everyone was having a great time--what's that, check this out, wow, did you see that, and so on. I saw a bird with a gray cap and eye ring and darted after it thinking it might be a you know what, but then, after getting a good view of it, I said, "D--- Nashville." Imagine being disappointed seeing a Nashville--and this one was brilliant. Perhaps the highlight of the trip was the flock of blackburnians. We ended up with over 45 species and 10 warblers, which is great for Cromwell.

Some of the birds:

Hummer (1)
Warbling Vireo (2)
Scarlet Tanager (6)
Pileateds (2)
Cooper's (couple)
