Yesterday we spent the day birding Rockburn and environs. A nice day with early warbler activity but frustrating to see much in the overcast. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was special. At 11:45 we had 600+ BROAD WINGS flyover the school in about 15 minutes. A SWAMP sparrow was my first for the fall and very exciting!
Today we birded some private property and were all humbled by this (later determined) MERLIN http://flic.kr/p/aok7ug. It appeared to be large when it flew in and bigger than a close sharp shinned. Studying the photos later we came to the conclusion that it is a Merlin. A beautiful LINCOLN’S sparrow was super!!! Sparrow numbers were definitely higher than a few days ago .
