After Saturday's wet and cloudy conditions, Sunday dawned partly sunny, dry and quite promising. Shortly after 8:00 AM the first Sharpies appeared, and by 8:30 small groups of Broad-wings began to rise from the north and north-west. Several kettles formed close-by and overhead, the largest group numbering 36 hawks. The morning sun reflected beautifully off of their wings as they swirled around, gained height, then moved off silently. Always a delight to see! By 10:00 AM the BWs were fairly high, passing by in groups ranging from 5 to 28 birds.
Of particular interest was the Bald Eagle movement today. Twenty two were counted heading south while a handful of locals remained in the reservoir area. This number of migrant B. Eagles shattered our previous single day record of 14 birds. One tight group of 5 B. Eagles passed the radio tower just after 11:00 AM.
We had pretty good views of several Merlins shooting by fairly low, while most of the Sharpies were quite high through out the day.
