The slow moving weather systems that have brought so much rain, perpetual overcast skies, morning fog and light winds mostly from the east have kept migrant raptor numbers very low over the past week or so. The following is a summary of what we've seen. Many thanks to all those who endured this dismal weather to monitor the flight. Andy Smith's relentless tenacity proved invaluable!!!

Cromwell Valley Park HawkWatch - seven day period: 9/19 through 9/25 2011

Broadwings - 23

Sharpies - 45

Coopers - 6

Osprey - 12

Am. Kestrel - 21

Merlin - 6

N. Harrier - 2

B. Eagle - 4

Redtail - 1

several Un. Id. raptors

Once this weather clears up we may get a substantial push of raptors that are still north of us. This weekend looks good with forecasts of sunny, dry conditions. If any wind out of the north is present we should see some movement.

This Sunday, Oct. 2nd, Cromwell Valley Park will be hosting "DAM JAM 2011" which is a celebration of Loch Raven Reservoir. Wildlife exhibits, Scales & Tales, artists, photo work-shops, food vendors, live music and more will be on hand for this free family event. This will take place at the Willow Grove area of the park, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, right in front of the hawk-watch site. I would encourage all of our hawk-watch regulars and all birders in general to join us on the hill. This could be an ideal opportunity as a community outreach to share with the public the joy of hawk watching and birding in general! Just google Baltimore County Dam Jam 2011 for more info.
