Joe Stag and Bob Rineer spent several hours counting hawks on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Cromwell Valley. The clouds started to give way to breaks of sun as winds shifted out of the north-west. One of the highlights was a Peregrine Falcon, perhaps the first of the season.

CVP Hawkwatch - 9/29/2011 - 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM - 5 observers/visitors at various times

Broadwings - 18

Sharpies - 16

Osprey - 9

Am. Kestrel - 3

N.Harrier - 2

Redtail -2

Peregrine falcon - 1

We are hopeful that the cool weather predicted for this weekend will push more migrant hawks our way. The watch-site will be manned over the next few days at least, and we are especially looking forward to Sunday as Cromwell will be hosting "DAM JAM 2011".
This is a celebration of Baltimore's reservoirs, particularly Loch Raven reservoir. Live music, Scales & Tales, arts, food vendors and more should attract a nice crowd to this free family event. This will be a good opportunity to share the joys of birding and hawk-watching with the public. I encourage all of our hawk-watch friends to come out and join the fun! Just google Baltimore County Dam Jam for more info.
