The seven of us began the walk in very unpromising conditions: cold, drizzly, and a bit windy. But we got lucky with the first spot we went to at the Nature Walk--a fallout of warblers that lasted about 30 minutes. We found 9 species in this one small area (goldenrod field corner next to woods, 152 side). Many versions of common yellowthroats everywhere--typical...but then a palm (drab), then Tennessees (lovely), then redstart, and so on. Most unusual: 2 late worm-eating warblers. My own favorites were the Tenns, b/c I hadn't seen many all year--and these provided excellent views. Practically everything we saw was in this one location--very little elsewhere. Lots of fun. 2 and a half hours later we had circled back to this same location--nothing. Had we started at a different location we easily could have had only one warbler sp. Besides the warblers, not a lot of other stuff--not one vireo, for instance. We saw Wood Thrush, Pileated, WB Nuthatches, Indigo Buntings, Bluebirds, Waxwings, Red-Shouldered Hawk, and other usual guys. Weirdly, not one goldfinch. A year ago, we heard black-throated greens singing (!) here, but not today.

Warblers:

TENNESSEE (5)
NASHVILLE (2)
Magnolia (1)
Black-Throated Green (2)
Palm (1)
Blackpoll (2)
Redstart (2)
WORM-EATING (2)
Common Yellowthroat (tons)
