I spent Sunday morning birding and botanizing with my girlfriend at Patuxent River Park and Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary in P.G. Co. Avian highlights included one Gray-cheeked Thrush a short ways down the "Nature Study" trail at Pax R Park. Warbler diversity was relatively low but we did find a Wilson's Warbler and a Northern Waterthrush, along with the more numerous Redstarts, Black and Whites, and Magnolias. Large numbers of migrating Flickers, Catbirds, Phoebes, Robins, and Bluebirds were around and we had 6 different Am. Kestrels hunting over the fields at Merkle. Other notables included 2-3 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and nice close looks a Pileated Woodpecker. Jug Bay had a flock of about 40 N/ Shovelers that came screaming around the corner from the south when a Bald Eagle appeared over head. Several Forster's Terns, Laughing Gulls, D.C. Cormorants, Tree Swallows, and Gr. Yellowlegs but nothing unusual. Full list below.
