This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, October 4, at 10 AM.

Top birds this week are MISSISSIPPI KITE and FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER in VA,
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER in DE, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER in DC.

Other birds of interest include raptors, SORA, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, COMMON
RAVEN, warblers, SUMMER TANAGER, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

On 9/30, a MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen over Waynewood, VA (Fairfax Co).

A FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER was spotted at Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co VA on
10/1.

Cape Henlopen SP (Sussex Co DE) hosted a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER on
9/30. In SE DC, a CONNECTICUT WARBLER was present at Ft. Dupont Pk during
10/1 and 10/2.

Raptor migration was apparently slowed by the wet weather, but has resumed,
with good numbers now seen at all hawk watches as well as elsewhere. If not
a typo, the 1105 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS reported by the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch
(Augusta Co VA) was quite impressive. GOLDEN EAGLES were spotted from
Kiptopeke Hawk Watch (Northampton Co VA) on 9/27, and from Rockfish Gap Hawk
Watch on 10/1.

In MD, several SORA were encountered: at Southwest Area Pk (Baltimore) and
Ladew Gardens (Harford Co) on 10/2, and at Hart-Miller Island (Baltimore Co)
on 10/3.

Although sometimes hard to find, RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS are always present
in small numbers throughout our area. But at the Turkey Point Hawk Watch
(Cecil Co MD), flyovers of 9 on 9/29 and 11 on 9/30 were exciting.

Once again, a COMMON RAVEN has been spotted in the Coastal Plain, this time
at Annapolis Junction Business Pk, Anne Arundel Co MD, on 9/29.

Many species of warbler are still being seen. In addition to those mentioned
above, a CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen in Oak Marr Pk (Oakton, Fairfax Co VA)
on 9/28, and probably another at the Blue Ridge Center, Loudon Co VA, on
9/30. At Governor Bridge NA (Anne Arundel Co MD), a MOURNING WARBLER was
spotted on 9/30.

A late SUMMER TANAGER was seen at Ft. Dupont Pk on 10/2, and a RUSTY
BLACKBIRD was observed at Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co MD, on 9/27.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports before midnight Monday, identify

Thank you for calling, and GOOD BIRDING.
