Ben Jesup and I took what turned out to be a very long lunchtime walk on the Mall today. We were also joined for a time by Jim Felley. Despite the gorgeous weather, bird-wise it was very much a late fall day.

There were a LOT of warblers around--probably the most we've had on a fall Mall walk. They started for us in the locusts at the east end of the Constitution Gardens pond, and then stayed with us fairly steadily as we worked our way south and then west along the ridge north of the Reflecting Pool. Highlights were single NASHVILLE, BLACKBURNIAN, and YELLOW, and 4 (!) each of CAPE MAYS and BLACK-THROATED GREEN. We also had 4 PALMS, 5 BLACKPOLLS, and about 30 YELLOW-RUMPED.

The Reflecting Pool seems to mostly be a barren wasteland of rough mud and pilings, but we picked out two shorebirds at the edge of the wettest area in the middle: SOLITARY SANDPIPER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS.

We had a nice selection of late fall arrivals: 2 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and one GOLDEN-CROWNED. A PHOEBE and PEWEE were also present. East of the DC WWI Memorial (which was otherwise fairly birdless) we added a BROWN CREEPER and 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.

We noted CHIMNEY SWIFTS overhead throughout the walk, and on our way out they gathered up enough so that we could count at least 60.
