This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, October 25, at
8 AM. 

Top birds this week are WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE and TOWNSEND'S WARBLER in
VA.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE,
shorebirds, POMARINE JAEGER, PARASITIC JAEGER, COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
NORTHERN SHRIKE, warblers, SNOW BUNTING, sparrows, and DICKCISSEL.

A probable WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE was banded at Kiptopeke, Northampton Co,
VA on Oct 21. An adult male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER flew past the Kiptopeke
SP Hawk Watch on Oct 22.

An adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and several CACKLING GEESE were
seen at the Chestertown sewage pond, Kent Co, MD on Oct 23. Perhaps
1000 SNOW GEESE were accompanied in flight by three ROSS'S GEESE near
Woodland Beach, Kent Co, DE on Oct 20. A CACKLING GOOSE flew over
Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on Oct 24. There were 11 SURF
SCOTERS on Hunting Creek Lake, Frederick Co, MD on Oct 23.

A COMMON LOON was found on Georgetown Reservoir, Washington, DC on Oct
21. A HORNED GREBE was seen on McMillan Reservoir, Washington, DC on
Oct 19 and 23.

Bombay Hook NWR and surrounding fields in Kent Co, DE hosted many
shorebirds on Oct 21 including 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 650 AMERICAN
AVOCETS, 14 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 7 MARBLED GODWITS, 1000 WESTERN
SANDPIPERS, and both LONG-BILLED and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS. There
were 11 MARBLED GODWITS on Skimmer Island, Ocean City, Worcester Co,
MD on Oct 20. A MARBLED GODWIT was found on the Bestpitch Ferry Rd,
Dorchester Co, MD on Oct 22. Three AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were on the
north end of Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on Oct 22.

A POMARINE JAEGER was seen from the hawk watch at Cape Henlopen SP,
Sussex Co, DE on Oct 23. A PARASITIC JAEGER was spotted from
Assateague Island, MD on Oct 22.

A late COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen on Assateague Island on Oct 22.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE has returned for a fifth winter at Chino Farms, Kent
Co, MD. It is currently not viewable from public roads.

Returning winter residents were widely reported this week, HERMIT
THRUSHES were especially noted.

Some warblers linger with several reports of TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE,
BLACKPOLL, and BLACK-THROATED BLUE among others. ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER was seen on Oct 22 at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA; on Oct
22 at Assateague Island, MD; and on Oct 24 off Melwood Rd, Upper
Marlboro, Prince Georges Co, MD.

Two SNOW BUNTINGS were found on Assateague Island, MD on Oct 22.

Fall is a great time to look for sparrows. One trip in Howard Co, MD
found 11 species on Oct 22. LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were seen all across
the region. Two very early AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen at
Meadowside Nature Center, Montgomery Co, MD on Oct 21. CLAY-COLORED
SPARROWS turned up in several spots; two were near Sunset Park, Ocean
City, MD on Oct 20; one was found in the north section of E. A. Vaughn
WMA, Worcester Co, MD on Oct 21; two were in a wooded patch near 94th
St in Ocean City, MD on Oct 21; one was in the parking area at Nutters
Neck WMA, Wicomico Co, MD on Oct 23; and a first winter bird was at
Hains Point, Washington, DC on Oct 24. An adult WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW
of the Gambel's subspecies was seen on Assateague Island, MD on Oct
22. A NELSON'S SPARROW was found on the Central Tract of Patuxent
Wildlife Research Center, Prince Georges Co, MD on Oct 24.

A DICKCISSEL was a fly-by in Bayside Campground, Assateague Island, MD
on Oct 22. Another DICKCISSEL was found at Herring Point, Cape
Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE on Oct 24.
