Hi Elda,

Firstly, congratulations for getting on board with eBird!  While it helps the larger birding community, it is also fun to document what you've seen over the years.

As a very frequent user of eBird, I would enter 1 record for birds seen @ 7 am for one hour and if you're looking out the window, make sure it's a "stationary" view.  If you see birds later in the day and you just peaked out when you weren't really birding, I'd record it as:  1pm, "incidental" view and just enter the time you saw the bird.

Similarly, if I go birding with someone at a park, but then get into an hour long conversation and I'm not birding, I record the total time birding, not the total time at a site.

In any case, eBird is meant to be fun, and while it's important to make the data as accurate as possible, it's more important (in my opinion) to enter data than to avoid doing it because it's too cumbersome.

Good Birding!

Hello,
Yesterday was the first day I reported to ebird. I did "yard birds in Colesville, MD" from 7-8 am.for I hour.

After 8 am I would just look out of  the window from time to time.  If I wanted to add a bird I saw later in the day   say at 1 pm, do I have to add five hours to the viewing time?  I hadn't been observing the solid additional 5 hours

( just peeking out  the window every once in a while.).

Thank you.

Elda
