MDOsprey,

I just received the following email. I have been out of the state for a
while, but back in my day there was just one report of Eared Grebe from
Garrett County, from the Trout Run WTP by Gary Felton. He apparently got
images, but they weren't very good and I don't think the MD/DCRC ever
received them. In any event, here is news of a potential first documented
county record:

From Caleb Putnam:

Sean Fitzgerald and Aaron Boone (in the field without email access
currently, cc'ed) just called me from Oakland Maryland where they have
found a transitional adult Eared Grebe. The bird was seen around 7AM on
Wednesday 9 November 2011, at the Uno Chicago Grill at 19746 Garrett
Highway, Oakland, MD (Garrett County). The bird was just north of the
property & not far offshore, in Deep Creek Lake. The location they were
scanning from was approximately here:

39.505115,-79.324125 (my coordinates, not theirs).

They have photos of the bird which they will circulate later tonight, in
their eBird checklist and the eBird Flickr feed. They asked me to spread
the word to whomever could post it to the Maryland listserv for us (if this
species is rare enough to merit it- we assume it is?). Could you please
help us get this to somebody who could post it to the listserv if you
cannot do so yourself?
