This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, November 15, at
11:30 AM. 

Top birds this week are WESTERN GREBE, in MD, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE
in VA, WHITE-WINGED DOVE and CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, grebes, GREAT CORMORANT,
NORTHERN GANNET, BROWN PELICAN, hawks, falcons, COMMON GALLINULE,
shorebirds, gulls, SHORT-EARED OWL, hummingbirds, warblers, sparrows,
SNOW BUNTING and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

A WESTERN GREBE was seen in from the Greenbridge Pipeline site in
Triadelphia Reservoir in Howard Co, MD waters on November 12. It was
not relocated on November 13.

Three EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were along Seymour Drive in South
Boston, Halifax Co, VA on November 14.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Castaways Campground, Worcester Co, MD on
November 13.

A CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD* has been visiting a garden near Easton, Talbot
Co, MD since October 23. As of November 10, it is still being seen but
seems to favor feeding in the afternoon. The garden is in a private
community where parking is limited and all viewing is from inside a
townhouse. Access can still be attained, but is by appointment only.
To arrange a time for a visit, phone the home owner at 410-822-1966;
she will provide directions to her home and instructions about
parking. Please be courteous and respectful. 

Waterfowl numbers continued to increase throughout the area. A flock
of 100 TUNDRA SWANS flew over Tunis Mills, Talbot Co, MD on November
11. A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was at the Snow Goose pool, Chincoteague
NWR, Accomack Co, VA on November 13. A HARLEQUIN DUCK was at the Ocean
City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on November 11. A SURF SCOTER was at Ft.
McHenry, Baltimore, MD on November 10 and 11.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was in the bay off the boardwalk at Cape Charles,
Northampton Co, Va on November 13. An EARED GREBE was in Deep Creek
Lake just north of the Uno Chicago Grill in Oakland, Garrett Co, MD on
November 9. An EARED GREBE was at KM 7 Assateague North End, Worcester
Co, MD on November 12.

Twenty-one GREAT CORMORANTS were found November 13 at Black Walnut
Point, Talbot Co, MD.

A steady stream of NORTHERN GANNETS, numbering upwards of 300, passed
by the south beach parking lot, Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on
November 12. One hundred thirty two BROWN PELICANS were at the upper
bridge to Hooper's Island, Dorchester Co, MD on November 13.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at the Harvey's Knob Hawkwatch, Roanoke VA
on November 14. GOLDEN EAGLES were seen from several of the local
hawkwatches during the week with one on November 9 and another on
November 13 at the Snicker's Gap Hawk Watch, on the Clarke/Loudoun Co,
VA, line. On November 9, a GOLDEN EAGLE was seen at the Rockfish Gap
Hawkwatch, Afton/Waynesboro, Augusta Co, VA. Two GOLDEN EAGLES were
near Cape Charles, Northampton Co, VA on November 12. One was on
Magotha Road and the other near the Stingray Restaurant.

A MERLIN dogfighting with crows was the highlight of a trip to Dyke
Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on November 13. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were
circling the Washington Monument, DC on November 10. A PEREGRINE
FALCON was perched in a yard in Howard Co, MD on November 10.

A COMMON GALLINULE was at Bayside Development Pond, Worcester Co, MD
over the weekend. The two continuing COMMON GALLINULES were seen again
on November 9 at Rum Pointe Golf Course, Worcester Co, MD.

BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were at Tanyard Marsh, Caroline Co, MD on
November 8, 9 and 13. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was at Fulton Pond,
Howard Co, MD on November 10, 11, 12 and 13. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER
was on Ironshire Road, Worcester Co, MD on November 12. A PIPING
PLOVER was at Assateague Island, across from Castaways Campground,
Worcester Co, MD on November 12.

A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was at the Castaways Campground, Worcester Co, MD
on November 14. MARBLED GODWITS were on the flats at Castaways
Campground with up to 7 on November 12 and 5 on November 13.

A FRANKLIN'S GULL and a BONAPARTE'S GULL were at Schoolhouse Pond,
Prince George's Co, MD on November 9.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen November 10 at the Swan Creek dredge
containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD.

A Selasphorus  hummingbird visited a feeder in Burnt Chimney, Franklin
Co, VA on November 12. Five hummingbirds were seen during the 2011
Worcester "Rarity Roundup"on November 12 and 13:  Selasphorus at
Georges Island, a quick fly-by at Vaughn South, non-Selasphorus in
West Ocean City, Ocean City and 56th Street flyby.

A diminishing number of warblers continued to be found around the area
including a late NORTHERN PARULA on Shell Road on November 13, a CAPE
MAY WARBLER at Bayside on November 11 and three BLACKPOLL WARBLERS on
November 12 at Vaughn North, Assateague NS and the Bayside A loop, all
in Worcester Co, MD. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at the Swan Creek
dredge containment facility on November 13. About ten ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS were at varied locations in Worcester Co, MD over the
weekend.

A wide variety of sparrows continued to be reported from a number of
locations. Seven species of sparrow including AMERICAN TREE,
CLAY-COLORED and FOX SPARROWS were at Brandywine State Park, DE. More
FOX SPARROWS were seen in varied locations. CLAY-COLORED, VESPER and
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were seen in Worcester Co, MD over the weekend. A
SEASIDE SPARROW was at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, on November 14.
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS continue to be seen at the Visitor Center at
Bombay Hook NWR, DE.

A SNOW BUNTING was at the causeway at Assateague Island, Worcester Co,
MD on November 8. A SNOW BUNTING was at Lake Elkhorn, Howard Co, MD on
November 12, 13 and 14. It is in the rocks on the west end of the
lake, near the dam. A SNOW BUNTING was at Ft. Frederick SP, Washington
Co, MD on November 12, 13 and 14.

RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from a number of different locations
during the week.

VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
