When I first bought my house in Sept 2007, one of my first homeowner
tasks was to have an arborist trim and uplift the one Chinese Elm and
many Norwegian Spruce trees in my yard.

I interviewed a few of them, and hired the one who wasn't the cheapest
but had at least correctly identified the trees (indeed, some had
not!). I just got the sense that he seemed to care, Especially when
I asked about the neat, rhythmic horizontal rows of small holes in the
trunk of the Elm tree. "Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker," he said with
confidence.

This morning I got my longest and closest look ever at a
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker as he meticulously probed the Elm about 15
feet outside my window. A very handsome bird, looking healthy and
calm.

That arborist knows his trees... and birds! Wishing everyone a happy
holiday filled with moments like these.
