This bush certainly deserves our homage, having hosted the Le Conte's so often. It didn't host it today when I was there, however. It did manage to entertain the usual sparrow species along with goldfinches and bluebirds. Lovely sights! And what made it unusual was the thick, low-lying fog, which made the whole place different, new--and the light was nevertheless good around the birds, encapsuling the birds uniformly. For those who haven't been there: many of those bushes sit on the edge of the marsh as you walk the circuit--but there is still THE ONE. TH

Rick is quite correct in the identification of the multiflora rose at Swan
Harbor Farm. As an addition to the subject, I have at my website, photos of
a gorgeous Eastern Bluebird in the act of starting a recipe of Rose Hip Jam,
or more likely Jelly. Jam has the seeds removed. Check out the photos, and
if anyone is interested, I can send along the recipe. Photo Link:

Also, I have posted some photos of the Le Contes "Sparrow from Sunday
morning at:

For the botanically inclined, hunting for the LeConte's using a barberry (as
most posts have called it) or bayberry (a Freudian typo from spending too
much time lately in the coastal marshes!) will avail thee naught.

The shrub is multiflora rose, an introduced exotic. The berries are rose
hips. As you walk the dike path it lines up directly between you and the
wood duck box in the cattails.

Harford County saying the Le Conte's Sparrow made an appearance again this
morning (sometime between 8:15/8:30 - 9:00 a.m.). Several birders were there
and got to see the sparrow. Dave and other photographers also got some great
pics. The sparrow showed about half way between the blind and the bayberry
bush (bush with red berries), which seems to be about where it popped up
yesterday morning around 7:20 a.m.
