I went back through my photos of the Le Conte’s Sparrow from yesterday and
November 26th.  The ones from November 26th show that the bird did have a
tail at that time, and the photos from yesterday clearly show that the tail
is gone.  I added some rear-view shots from both days to my Le Conte’s page
in case these photos can help shed some light as to what happened, and
whether the bird’s situation is normal or not.****
