I birded a little in the western part of the state today, highlights
being the birds in the title. The Golden Eagle was an adult bird that
lazily soared over Finzel Swamp in Garrett County. There was only a
small amount of snow on the ground in Garrett but it started coming down
heavier as I was leaving. I knew the bird activity was going to be
pretty slow, but it was entertaining to see how just how slow it was. I
"birded" for 18 minutes before recording my first species. Over an hour
later, I racked up a total of five species.
Locations east were much birdier. The Loggerhead Shrike that Jim Green
found in Hagerstown is still present. I found it in the bigger field
west of the community center - not the field immediately behind it. And
with the flock of Horned Larks on Oland Rd in Frederick County were a
minimum of four Lapland Longspurs, which I got excellent views of in the
scope.
