MD Osprey:

FYI, here is the rundown on previous MD and DC records of
Black-headed Grosbeak, not counting the current Denton bird:

MD - Accepted: 4
DC - Accepted: 1

MD - Not Accepted: 1
MD - Unreviewable: 2

However, three of these records are attributed to the same bird.

The first MD accepted record was from Pikesville in 1961.

Then, in 1963 a bird was found at a feeder in Bethesda in a backyard
that straddled the MD/DC boundary. The bird was seen in both MD and
DC. The following winter (63-64), what was most likely the same bird,
reappeared at the same MD feeder, but was not seen over the DC line
that winter.

In Jan 1969, a bird was observed at Accokeek in PG County.

In Oct-Nov 1978 a bird was reported at Bel Air High School in Harford
County. The sighting was published in Maryland Birdlife (MB) and the
bird was reported to have been photographed; however, no details or
photos were ever located. If anyone has any leads on this, please let me know.

In 1980, one was reported at Seneca. Again, the sighting was
published in MB, but no details were ever provided.

In 1982 one was reported from Howard County; however, the committee
found that the possibility of a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak could
not be eliminated. This report was not published in MB.

Details on these records and reports, follow:

The reviewers felt that the description did not adequately exclude
the possibility of a female or immature Rose-breasted
Grosbeak. The brief duration of the sighting was also a factor in not
accepting this record.
