I spent the day birding Western MD. I started at Finzel Swamp
where I encountered the day's highlight: a Northern Shrike perched on
a snag in the swamp proper. Other notable birds at Finzel were ten
American Tree Sparrows and a single Ruffed Grouse. From there things
got rather quiet. Piney Reservoir, Little Meadows Lake, North Branch,
and Rocky Gap combined for a total of about 200 Canada Geese, two
Buffleheads, and two Pied-billed Grebes. Big Pool, however, did have a
large number of water birds but not the greatest diversity:

Pied Billed Grebe--3
Ring-necked Duck--39
Common Merganser--19
Hooded Merganser--3
American Wigeon--1
Mallard--150
American Black Duck--100
Canada Goose--300

There easily could have been other ducks at Big Pool. The water was
quite high and almost all the dabblers were hidden among the newly
emergent vegetation.
