This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, January 3, at 10 AM. 

Top birds this week are BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD, WESTERN KINGBIRD in MD,
and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, RED-NECKED GREBE, BROWN PELICAN,
RED KNOT, gulls, seabirds, SHORT-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, warblers,
sparrows, YELLOW-HEADED and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. 

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* continuing at the Elms Environmental Education Center,
St. Mary's Co, MD was seen through December 29.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen at the Hurlock Waste Water Treatment ponds,
Dorchester Co, MD during the week. Please stop at the office to obtain
permission to enter the ponds.

A BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK* is coming to a feeder at Market St and N 6th St in
Denton, Caroline Co, MD. Parking is limited and the bird can only be viewed
from the sidewalk. Please see the extensive notes on seeing this bird on
MDOsprey list server. The bird was seen throughout the past week. 

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE plus a CACKLING GOOSE were at the Denton WWTP,
Caroline Co, MD on December 30 and 31. Another GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
was on a private pond off Rte. 15 a little north of Leesburg, VA on December
31. Five species of geese were at Prime Hook NWR, DE during the week
including GREATER WHITE-FRONTED, ROSS'S, CACKLING and 100,000 SNOW GEESE.
Four ROSS'S GEESE were at Kershner's pond, Frederick Co, MD on January 1.
Please note that the lane leading to Kershner's pond is a PRIVATE road and
parking on the shoulder of Rte. 17 is not encouraged. You can pull off Rte.
17 north of the pond where there is both a wide shoulder and visual access
to a large portion of the pond. Another ROSS'S GOOSE was at Jug Bay Natural
Area, Prince George's Co, MD also on January 1. A pair of EURASIAN WIDGEON
was on Prime Hook Road, Sussex Co, DE. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen from the
Piscataway Park boardwalk, Prince George's Co, MD on December 29.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was on the Sassafras River seen from Shellcross Wharf
Road, Kent Co, MD on January 1 and 2. Five RED-NECKED GREBES were at New
Point Comfort, Matthews Co, VA on January 2.

Over 100 BROWN PELICANS were spotted on December 27 and 28 from Tyler's
Cove, Hooper's Island, Dorchester Co, MD. 

Four RED KNOTS were on Skimmer Island, Worcester Co, MD on January 1. 

A BLACK-HEADED GULL sporadically visited the busy parking lot in front of
Best Buy at the Hunt Valley Mall, Baltimore, MD on December during the week.
Another BLACK-HEADED GULL was at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on
December 31. A FRANKLIN'S GULL was a fly-by at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel
Co, MD on December 29. On December 30, the Salisbury Landfill, Wicomico Co,
MD hosted a first cycle GLAUCOUS GULL, a first cycle ICELAND GULL and
several LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. An ICELAND GULL was in a field on Rte.
16, Talbot Co, MD on January 2. A first year GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the
river in Richmond, VA on January 1.

A fishing trip on December 31 observed 1360 DOVEKIES in Maryland waters.
Other birds encountered included 1 MANX SHEARWATER, 4 NORTHERN FULMAR, some
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and 10 ATLANTIC PUFFINS.

Three SHORT-EARED OWLS were hunting over a large field on the east side of
Bullfrog Rd, about a 1/4 mile north of Baumgardner Rd, west of Taneytown in
Carroll Co, MD on January 1. 

A NORTHERN SHRIKE visited a feeder in Boonsboro, Washington Co, MD on
January 1.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at Ford's Wharf Road (Fairmont WMA
west), Somerset Co, MD on December 28. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was spotted from
the boardwalk in Chesapeake Beach, Calvert Co, MD on December 28.
Another NASHVILLE WARBLER was at the Sassafras WMA, Kent Co, MD on January
2. An AMERICAN REDSTART was at Kingman Island, DC on December 29.

At least six AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were at the Howard Conservancy, Howard
Co, MD on December 30. Three AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were found ay Huntley
Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on December 31. On January 1, the Howard
Conservancy hosted an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and a FOX SPARROW. CLAY-COLORED
SPARROWS were seen west of Berlin and east of the Potomac River bottoms,
Worcester Co, MD on December 28. An unusual Spizella Sparrow, identified as
either CLAY-COLORED or BREWER'S, was at Occoquan Bay NWR, Woodbridge, Prince
William Co, VA on January 2. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in a mixed flock
which included AMERICAN TREE and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS on Rte. 658 (St.
Clair Road) near Leesburg, VA on January 2. A LARK SPARROW was at Assateague
SP, Worcester Co, MD on December 28 and January 1. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was
at the Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD on January 1.

A male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was on Rte. 9 in New Castle Co, DE between
Taylor's Bridge and Paddock Rd, south of Odessa. About six RUSTY BLACKBIRDS
were skulking in a marshy area near the GW Parkway hiker/biker trail on
December 31.

A female BALTIMORE ORIOLE visited a feeder in Herndon, VA on December 30.
