Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from December 30, 2011
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, December
2011, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.
Deposition materials are currently being placed into three big cells
occupying nearly the entire southern half of the island. This slurry will
probably discourage most waterfowl, gulls and shorebirds in coming weeks.
Intense sea duck hunting offshore has removed or driven off all the offshore
waterfowl. Also, there are lots of avian predators around to discourage
small waterfowl and shorebirds. Consequently, this latest census is rather
bland.
