Hi Everybody,
The Kent County Bird Club will launch 2012 with a half-day trip to
Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday the seventh of
January. Nancy and I will be at the Dollar General parking lot opposite
the east end of Spring St. on the side toward Philosopher's Terrace at
8:00 AM. South and west county residents may arrange to meet us at the
Eastern Neck Narrows at about 8:30 AM where we will be given a
presentation by refuge staffer Colby Hawkinson. Eastern Neck Island is
great for waterfowl concentrations including hundreds of Tundra Swans,
and large numbers of scaup, geese, buffleheads, goldeneyes, and
dabblers. Despite the recent brief cold snap there should still be lots
of waterfowl around. The Island is also good for landbirds with its
abundance of hedgerows, woodlots, and marshland including woodpeckers
(Red-headed has been seen recently), towhee, thrasher, thrushes, and
sparrows. We look forward to your company for some mid-winter birding -
dress warmly and bring snacks. The current forecast is calling for
partly cloudy weather with temperatures in the 30s to low 40s.
Good birding,
