Visited Kershner's Pond in Frederick county today hoping to see the
previously reported Snow Geese. Instead found 4 Ross's Geese, showing
the round heads and short, stubby, blue-based bills with no "grin patch"
that are characteristic of the species. I also found at least one
Cackling Goose among 1800 Canadas. Photos of the Ross's Geese are here:

Chuck Parker came after I arrived and helped to confirm the ID of
this rare-in-the-Piedmont species. Thanks also to Bill Hubick for
confirming after the fact. Others who have reported Snow Geese from
this pond recently may want to reevaluate their IDs.

Good birding!
