The 6th Chesterville CBC was held yesterday (Jan. 1st) on a spectacular weather day. The count circle is centered on Chesterville and includes portions of Queen Anne's, Kent and Cecil counties. We had 14 participants; Ed Boyd, Maren Gimpel, Jim and Trish Gruber, Ron and Carol Gutberlet, Tara Holste, Jared and Zack Parks, Danny Poet, Steve Sheffield, Dan Small, Amanda Spears, Jim Stasz.

Beside the Red-necked Grebe most other highlights were due to the mild weather and open water for waterfowl. Our unofficial total species tally was 92 with one hybrid (Mallard x Black Duck) and two count week species so far (John Hubbell, birding in Kent today has found two count week birds which I'm sure he'll post about later).

Highlights-

Red-necked Grebe (1)- found by Jared and Zack Parks and Tara Holste on the Sassafrass River seen from Shellcross Wharf Rd. If people are interested in seeing this bird, be mindful of the two houses at the end of the road. It might be best to park before the new pavement starts and walk the rest of the way to the water (only ~ 50 meters). This is a new species for the count.

Blue-winged Teal (6)- also found by Jared, Zack and Tara in the impoundments along Rt 298 west of where Rt 292 and Rt 566 split to the north in Kent Co.

Wood Duck - this species has been found on all 6 counts we've had but ........reported by three different parties, but by far the best sighting was by Jim Stasz and Ed Boyd who had 130!!!! in a Delmarva Bay on Chino Farms, Queen Anne's Co. An amazing winter number.

Red-breasted Merganser (3) - new count species in the same location as the grebe.

Northern Shrike (1) - continuing Chino bird.

American Tree Sparrow (1) - found by Jim Gruber and Amanda Spears on a private tree Nursery in Kent Co.

Eastern Phoebe (5) - found by three different parties.

Western Palm Warbler and Palm Warbler sp - found by Dan Small on a private tree nursery in Queen Anne's Co.

Keep us in mind for next CBC season, our count will be Dec 23rd.
