In case folks might also enjoy captive raptors, we preceded our Short eared owl viewing a few weeks ago with a visit to Hashawha/Bear Branch Nature Center in Westminster which had resident or recovering pairs of great horned, red tail hawks, singles of bald eagle, red phased Eastern Screech, harrier, barred and coopers. Also a vulture. The naturalist was feeding them around 3:30 pm and was kind enough to bring the screech out. Otherwise , a flashlight was necessary to find it. We parked where the road was blocked by a gate and walked a short distance thru pines to find the cages.

The field is on the opposite side (southeast side) from where we parked (the field actually begins at the corner of Bull Frog Rd & Baumgardner Rd, but I recommend going up further on Bull Frog Road as mentioned. We arrived about 4:30 & saw the first of the two owls about 5:00.
