On Saturday, January 7, Brent Elementary, a DC Public School on Capitol Hill, hosted its 3rd annual New Year's Bird Count for Kids. This event is one a growing number of Christmas Bird Counts for Kids held across the country and founded by Sonoma Birding in Sonoma, California.

Turnout was great, although an exact count of participants eluded us, we're estimating between 200-250 people from our school community came out, including about 90-100 kids and their families. There was huge enthusiasm for birding all around, and many people had a great time with birds. The beautiful day certainly helped, this was the first time we've done this event at Brent without snow! Thank you to our walk leaders and other volunteers for making this event possible.

A complete list compiled by our three student teams follows. Highlights, named by the kids, include great black backed gull, american robin, and great blue heron.
