Our goldfinch numbers are up today as well. If other places got freezing
rain as we did in Kent County, the twigs and weeds have a coating of
ice, which makes it harder for the birds to get at the seeds. Hence they
switch their attention to feeders. The kinglets and other
insect-gleaners have a harder time after ice storms, searching for food
in more sheltered interiors of evergreens, etc. that didn't get coated
if they can.
