Matthew: Lisa and I had the same experience at Elms on Sunday morning. We scanned for the Barrow's for about a half hour. Overcast skies, wind and distance frustrated us. But we didn't conclude the bird was not out there ... Somewhere.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Barrow's Goldeneye - no luck

I stopped by the Elms for about an hour between classes today hoping for a chance to see the Barrow's Goldeneye. The conditions were better than my previous attempt (no wind), but not by much (very foggy). Unfortunately, despite finding large numbers of Common Goldeneyes, I was not able to locate the Barrow's. It doesn't help much that my cheap tripod renders my scope almost useless. I'm hoping to try again later in the week.

Other highlights included a large flock of around 65 Bonaparte's Gulls on the salt pond by the visitors center, and two Brown Thrashers. Despite my best efforts, I was not able to find anything exciting mixed in with the Bonaparte's.
