MD Osprey:
This sad subject is only partially related to wild birds, so a
continuing MD Osprey thread is probably not appropriate ... even
though I know other people knew him or knew of him ...
My wife, Barbara, and I do not subscribe to a Baltimore newspaper or
check Baltimore news web sites, so that may partially explain the
lateness of our learning that Dr Don Zantop, 59, our good friend and
avian veterinarian and a samaritan of many Maryland avian rescues,
died last October in a scuba diving accident off the coast of NC,
even though he was a very experienced diver. Barbara called his
clinic today in Fallston, MD to make an appointment and was told the
tragic news.
Don became our avian vet for Barbara's parrots about 20 years ago
when he was the only avian board-certified vet in the state (there
are some more, now). He was one of the nicest people you would ever
want to meet, he genuinely cared for birds--all birds, had an
excellent touch with the animals, and was very thorough. I could go
on and on with superlatives. He also did a lot in the state with wild
bird rescues.
We are extremely saddened by this late news. We will miss him as a
friend, as well as our excellent vet.
FYI, here is a link to his obituary in the Baltimore paper ...

This is an article in the local Wilmington, NC paper about his accident ...

Our condolences to his family, his coworkers, his friends, his
patients, and his pets.
Barbara and I are crestfallen ... which is probably an ironically
appropriate adjective since one of our birds, and one his patients,
is our cockatoo. She will miss him, too.
