The two big highlights this morning on Assateague were a Common Redpoll at
Bayside point and a Prairie Warbler at the Bayside Campground.
I heard the Redpoll flyover the parking lot around 7:50AM. It made three
large circuits around the parking lot, calling continously. I had already
made the ID and gotten some documentation shots of it in flight, but it did
me one better, and briefly landed in a cedar tree just south the parking
lot, allowing for great photos, which I'll post to my Flickr page in the
near future.
The Prairie Warbler was seen in a juniper near the dumping station at the
end of the camgground loop. Jared Fisher and his wife Victoria were able to
relocate the warbler a little later on at Bayside point. They managed
better photos than I did - even some of the bird on the ground!
Waterfowl are around in good numbers up and down the bay, the most
numerous being Buffleheads, but also present are Red-breasted Mergansers,
Horned Grebes, both loons, etc. A drake Common Goldeneye and Black Scoter
were behind the Ocean City Convention Center.
