Hey everyone,

This morning John Hubbel and I birded the Somerset County marshes
hoping to find the American White Pelican that was found by Ron
Gutberlet a couple days ago. We struck out on the pelican, but we did
find a Common Teal in the marshes viewed from the Riley Robert's Rd
pulloff. This section of marsh is not visible from Riley Robert's
Road, but you can view the marsh from a small parking area that is
about .5 mile past the entrance gate on the right. There were 1000's
of dabblers present with Green-winged Teal and Northern Pintail being
the most numerous. American Wigeon, Gadwall, Northern Shovelers,
Hooded Mergansers, Tundra Swans, Mallards, and American Black Ducks
were also observed. We counted 5 Snowy Egrets, 18 Great Egrets, 14
Tricolored Herons, and 27 Black-crowned Night Herons. At Wenona we
had Surf Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks, and a single Horned Grebe. At
the end of Messick Rd we had a small flock of Common Goldeneye and no
peregrines were seen on the hack tower. We then drove down to the
Fairmont area where we had more Surf Scoters, a single drake Black
Scoter, and a single Common Loon on the bay viewed from the town of
Rumbly.
