On PA Birds i found mention of a patch and yard contest based on e bird and wondered if

1. A similar service is available for MD birders and
2. [Something i've wondered about for some time] - Whether e bird is accessable for those of us who connect to the internet by dial-up?

Rather than post a link, which seems more and more a risky thing to do - to get the gist of the patch and yard contest idea, i suggest searching on your favorite non-evil search engine for "patch and yard contest" which BING brings up as first choice:

"2012 Patch and Yard contests by Drew Weber at Nemesis Bird"

I especially like the "patch" idea.  It can take some time to really get to know a specific habitat.  If this encourages more birders to choose a patch (or patches) closer to home, that would tend to lessen our combined carbon footprint while we pursue our passion.

ps If anyone can tell me how to eliminate the annoying "squares" that seem everpresent in my postings, please respond on or off-line.  I notice i am not alone in this regard...
