Hi all,
It felt like spring in the morning and winter in the evening at Druid Hill Park today. In the wooded areas within and the Zoo at around 8:45 am here is what I saw

Canada Goose 57 (flyover and on fields)
Mallard 2
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Northern Flicker 2
Carolina Chickadee 6
Tufted Titmouse 13
Northern Cardinal 2
Eastern Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 2
Dark-eyed Junco 5
American Goldfinch 2
One Goldfinch, several Juncos, several Titmice and the Towhee were singing.

And then, despite the snow, at about 5:15 this list from the small pond within the Zoo, visible from the road up to the Mansion House.

Hooded Merganser 9 (3 stunningly beautiful males)
Canada Goose 22 (on field)
Great Blue Heron 1
Cooper's Hawk 1
Herring Gull 3
Great Black-backed Gull 2
Carolina Chickadee 1
Tufted Titmouse 4
Northern Cardinal 1
Dark-eyed Junco 6
No birds where singing at this point.

There was Interesting Gull in question. It is one that I have seen before and suspected is a Lesser Black-backed. I have never seen its legs unfortunately as it is always sitting on the water. It is a pretty large gull, but built rather more slenderly than a Herring or GBB. It has very long wings. Today, of course, it was out of the water perched on the fountain in the middle of the reservoir. The fact that everything further than 25 feet away was washed with snowfall did not help me (it's pretty rough being a colorblind birder in case you ever wondered about that, especially on days like today). In any case, if anyone wanders through that part of the city its worth a stop to see. It is typically there with the other in the middle of the lake.
