As I posted here on December 23, a Red-shouldered Hawk in my yard was
doing the same thing. Since then, I've seen her repeat this behavior
numerous times. On several occasions she has been accompanied by a
slightly smaller bird (her mate?), who joined her on the ground only
briefly -- and with a notable lack of enthusiasm -- before flying up to
the nearest branch.
