This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, February 14, at
10 AM. 

Top birds this week are TRUMPETER SWAN in VA, CACKLING GOOSE in DC, BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE in MD, WESTERN GREBE in DE, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in DC

Other birds of interest include SNOW GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, COMMON EIDER,
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, egrets, herons, GOLDEN EAGLE, COMMON GALLINULE,
BLACK-HEADED GULL, RAZORBILL, SNOWY OWL, shrikes, COMMON RAVEN, TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER (in PA), CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, SNOW BUNTING, DICKCISSEL, BALTIMORE
ORIOLE, COMMON REDPOLL, and PINE SISKIN.

Two TRUMPETER SWANS were seen Feb 8, 9, 10, & 13 at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier
Co VA.  On Feb 13, a CACKLING GOOSE was seen on the Potomac River south of
Roosevelt Island (SW DC).  At the Elms Environmental Education Center in St.
Mary's Co MD, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was present on Feb 10 & 13.  The WESTERN
GREBE continues at Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co DE, with sightings Feb 7 & 10
around the fishing pier and ferry area.  In SE DC, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
was spotted at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens on Feb 9.

Another huge flock of SNOW GEESE was reported this week, on Feb 9 at
Broadkill Marsh, Sussex Co DE, with an estimate of 50,000.  A female
EURASIAN WIGEON was reported at Greenbelt Lake, Prince George's Co MD, on
Feb 11.  In the inlet at Ocean City MD (Worcester Co), 8 COMMON EIDERS were
spotted on Feb 9.

At Deal Island WMA, Somerset Co MD, one AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, 13 GREAT
EGRETS, 4 SNOWY EGRETS, and 5 TRICOLORED HERONS were seen on Feb 11.  A
GREEN HERON turned up at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Anne
Arundel Co MD, on Feb 9.

On Feb 13, on MD 309 near Centerville MD (Queen Anne's Co), a GOLDEN EAGLE
was seen eating a SNOW GOOSE.

In the city of Fredericksburg, VA (between Spotsylvania and Stafford
Counties), a COMMON GALLINULE was spotted on Feb 13.  The BLACK-HEADED GULL
has turned up again at the Hunt Valley Mall, in Baltimore Co MD, most
recently on Feb 13.  RAZORBILLS have been seen again, 4 at Indian River
Inlet, Sussex Co DE, on Feb 10, and one at Ocean City Inlet on Feb 11.

At the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Northampton Co VA, a SNOWY OWL was seen
well on Feb 8.  A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was spotted on Stone Ridge Rd, in Clarke
Co VA, on Feb 10, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co
MD, on Feb 7.  Once again, single COMMON RAVENS have been scattered in the
coastal plain of central MD, on Feb
7 at Loch Raven Reservoir (Baltimore Co) and in the city of Columbia (Howard
Co), on Feb 8 in Anne Arundel Co just east of the Baltimore-Washington Pkwy,
and on Feb 10 in Woodbine, Carroll Co.

Slightly out of our normal reporting area, in Carlisle PA, not far from the
MD-PA line, a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was seen at a suet feeder on Feb 10.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was spotted on Feb 11 at Vaughn WMA, Worcester Co MD.
A great yard bird was reported Feb 12 in Salisbury, MD (Wicomico Co): a SNOW
BUNTING on the patio.  On Feb 7, Cape Henlopen SP hosted a DICKCISSEL.

In Manassas VA (Prince William Co), a BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen driving
other birds away from a seed feeder on Feb 8, and on Feb 7, a COMMON REDPOLL
was at a feeder in Laurel MD (Prince George's Co).
Finally, PINE SISKINS have been much less numerous than a year ago, but two
were reported recently, one in Croom, MD (Prince George's Co) on Feb 8, and
another in Fredericksburg VA on Feb 13.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
