I was at the site by 1040 this AM; there were ~200 CANG in the bare part of the field (SW corner of intersection) but no SACR among them. I notice from a photo that the crane had been in the corn stalks, far from the geese and closer to the road (Yellow Bank). I also checked the fields further along Yellow Bank Rd, Lyons Creek Rd, and Dunkirk Park - but the crane was nowhere to be seen.

Now this curious info-bit: Jane reminds me that while we were doing the Patuxent River W'bird Count at Merkle in 1990, we saw a Sandhill Crane flying SW from across the river, which is Calvert Co at that point. So the bird must have been on the CV side a few seconds before we saw it, but we did not report it as such since we had not actually seen it on that side. The date was Feb 6.

Mary Burton sent a couple of definitive photos of this bird. Nice find! Yellow Bank Road is just north of the light in Dunkirk where there's a McDonald's on the SE corner.

Gordon was heading out this morning on Yellow Bank when he saw an unusual bird in the fields at the corner of Rt 4.  A little research and we decided that it was a Sandhill crane.  So we thought we would share our picture with some birders that might be interested.  A great way to start the day.  Mary
