The interesting thing about the Common Raven expansion is that they're well south of DC but the Potomac seems to be stopping them from moving into Charles and St. Mary's. Look at the eBird distribution map to see this clearly. Presumably they'll move into southern Anne Arundel and northern Calvert at some point.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Common Raven along Route 32 (Anne Arundel Co.)

Hi Everyone,

For the first time since my last post with the same subject, I saw a COMMON RAVEN perched along Route 32 east of 295. At about 7:30 a.m. this morning, it was perched on the first tower (south of the road) to the east of exit 8 along Route 32. This is very likely one of the same birds that have been seen at the Annapolis Junction site described by Jay Sheppard. As I mentioned in my previous post, please be very careful pulling over on this stretch of road for two reasons. First, there is heavy traffic on weekday mornings and accidents are frequent. Second, this stretch of road borders Fort Meade, so if there was a location where you're likely to be harassed for suspiciously pointing binoculars, this is it. The Annapolis Junction site is probably a safer and more reliable alternative. That said, this is a very interesting range expansion, and these sightings are essentially the southeastern edge of their expansion. Very cool.

Good birding!

Bill
