Working at home today, and I just saw my first Osprey of season here at Jug Bay. I noticed a bird soaring while I was on the phone, and since I was engaged in the conversation it took a moment before I realized it was an Osprey. Got my bins and saw it was intently circling over a nest platform on mainstem of the river. Then noticed there was another Osprey on the platform. I know usually males arrive before females and stake out nest areas, but teh one on the platform is a female. The male landed, and is now perched nearby on a log on the bank.
I have been looking daily the last week, as the end of February is traditionally the first week they might arrive. However, last year was a record early date for me here (Feb 19), and as mild as this winter was I am surprised it took so long this year!
Also of note, the Phoebes that nest around here arrived yesterday. There are at least two singing now.
Cheers!
