 Kurt,

I was at Irvine yesterday afternoon and, after a lot of hunting, must have seen the bird you saw. There were 2 rather unusual Savannah's, both with yellow browstripes, heavier in the front near the bill, but yellow nearly all the way back. There was also yellow on the cheeks of each bird - faint, but very distinct. Each had a short tail as well. One, I swear, seemed to have thin white striping on the very tip of the tail. Since I can find no sparrow that has a tail stripe, I have to think that maybe the feather tips might have been worn and hence looked light.

These 2 birds did not really look like Savannahs, but they were with other more typical Savannahs, so likely to be the same.

Also saw the FOY Chipping Sparrow at Irvine. Very nice place, even though the LeConte's was hiding from us!

The bird I saw at noon was NOT the LeConte's. Photos clearly show a
moustachial stripe, so it was a Savannah. Sigh...

I guess that would explain what it was doing traveling with Savannahs.

Others, however, did spot it in the cattails, noting orange tones. I
missed that.
