Stephanie Mason, Senior Naturalist at Audubon Naturalist Society,
Chevy Chase, and I, led a group of 10 to parkland along Piscataway
Creek and the Potomac River in PG County this morning and early
afternoon, 3/18, starting at Wharf Road and finishing at the National
Colonial Farm.
Waterfowl were, as expected, not easy to locate at the end of this
short and mild winter. However, we found a somewhat unexpected
immature WHITE-WINGED SCOTER swimming with both Scaup species just
off Wharf Rd. A single Ruddy Duck was also with the Scaup. A few
Wood Ducks were seen flying, generally as pairs, but frustratingly
difficult to spy on the water.
Newly arrived Osprey were seen in a few places and we found a Bald
Eagle on the nest South of the boardwalk at Piscataway Park with the
other pair member perched nearby. Singing BROWN THRASHERs seemed to
be all over, and the Colonial Farm back fields had plenty of
sparrows, including singing FIELD SPARROW.
